In this interview, I chat with Daniel Pacey, aka @DownfallOfProspero. He is one of the fellow participants in the recent #Championsoffenris competition. One thing that drew me to this gent was his style. He paints his Sons of Russ in the nitty gritty way! His colors are wonderfully muted, yet beautifully defined. I couldn't get enough of his boys in blue/grey, so I thought I'd get to know him better!
1. How long have you been involved in the hobby in general?
"I have been in the hobby just over a year and a half now, I started in November 2018, I did try to get into the hobby two years previous but didn’t stick to it as it was so vast and big, what pulled me into the hobby was reading the Horus heresy book series and that pulled me into it giving me background and ideas I could try".
2. How long have you been actively promoting your content on social media?
"I've been using instagram to promote since January 2019, the general idea with it wasn’t to promote but to keep a visual log about how far my painting would come and to get feed back from my models, the nice thing about the community were apart of is every one is willing to talk to each other and help, this quickly enabled me to meet some new people from around the world and enjoy there feed back as well as getting inspiration from some of the amazing work out there by other artists".
3. What initially drew you to the miniature model hobby realm?
"So, what drew me in the first time was a childhood memory of years previous when I used to collect what now is middle earth with my brother, back in 2018 I was talking to my friend, Outlanders_luke and we went to a gig up in Nottingham. I swear he planned it because he left several hours early and managed to plan in a trip around Warhammer world, the exhibition caught my attention and on going around I came across the 30k candy red thousand sons army, seeing the colour was enough to put me on a road to 30k, so in a nut-shell, seeing the colour candy red got me into the game".
4. What tabletop game would you say is your favorite? What particular faction within that game is your favorite and why?
"So my favourite game to play is definitely Horus Heresy, I’ve been considering 40k for a while but looking to see what 9th brings to the table to see where to take it, my favourite faction is definitely the space wolves of Russ. It didn’t start this way, as said my first ever army was the candy red of the Thousands Sons, this was a great army to paint and some of my favourite work to date is with that army, but with doing that army I like to research what I’m doing and through this it naturally introduced me to the Space Wolves. Through reading about them and seeing the models, ideas quickly formed in my head and led me down this road. It's helped a lot playing with these because I was still learning the rules and it simplified the game for me and allowed me to learn the rules in my own time without having to over think on the psychic phase.
5. What is more enjoyable for you personally: painting or actually playing the game?
"I have has some great games in. The past year but the highlight of the hobby for me is painting, it amazes me what people can do and make these models look like and I think it brings the creativeness out of people, its nice to play but with the painting it allows you to have an army to focus on and perfect, while also having a collection. Of some stunning models from all over the modeling universe".
6. If money or time weren’t a consideration, what single purchase/upgrade/expansion would you make to further your hobby enjoyment?
"This isn’t the answer to the exact question so I hope this will suffice, if money and time were of no issue then my dream idea is to collect and paint every forge world Primarch and paint every primarch a personal body guard of models and have them all on display together is my dream for the hobby".
7. Where do you get the inspiration for your particular army theme or style?
"So the main inspiration for my army came from reading. The nice thing about reading is everyone sees it differently in their minds and from reading about the wolves my mind couldn’t see them in blue, they were always dirty grey with gold trim. The red on my models was to have some separation from just the grey and gold but it was important to me to keep this as dark as possible. Outlanders_luke has always been very good at sharing ideas with me and helping me with new ways of working with models and creating new ideas for our army".
8. What tips or advice would you give someone just starting out in the hobby?
"The tips I would give for getting into the hobby personally is to do a little research first depending if that’s your thing, it can be like a sweet shop in these stores and easy to get carried away, head on to instagram or Facebook and see some of the work people have to show and make a plan and some ideas, talk to people and have fun, take it at your own pace, for all those looking to start good luck and get in touch".
